This homestyle way of making shepherd's pie will make you wonder what the other shepherd's pie really was.... lol

  • 6 medium potatoes
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 large onions chopped
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 can diced tomatoes drained
  • 2 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp tabasco sauce
  • 3/4 cup cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic
  1. Cook potatoes in boiling salted water for 20 minutes. Mash with milk, butter, cheese, salt and pepper. Reserve.

  2. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large deep skillet. Cook onions and garlic until tender. 

  3. Stir in beef. Brown lightly. 

  4. Stir in flour. 

  5. Add milk and bring to a boil. Cook 3-4 minutes.

  6. Add tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon. Cook until thickened slightly for about 10 minutes.

  7. Stir in seasonings, breadcrumbs and peas. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 

  8. Transfer mixture to a buttered casserole dish. Spread or pipe mashed potatoes on top.

  9. Sprinkle with paprika and bake at 400F for 30 minutes.
